UIL

Parents,

Hello, my name is Melissa Vela, and I am the UIL coordinator for the district.  I look forward to working with all campuses and having a successful year in all aspects of UIL competition from academics to athletics.

As the end of the second six weeks is winding down, it is imperative that students stay on top of their grades.  In order to participate in any UIL extra-curricular activities, including athletics, band, cheerleading and academic competitions, students must be considered "eligible" to participate.  In most cases, this means that students must maintain an average of 70 or above on their six weeks grading report.

If a student does not meet these passing standards, they will become "ineligible" to participate in extra-curricular activities for a specified period of time.  With that being said, students can still practice with their team before or after school, but they will not be permitted to travel with the team or participate in any competitions.  Students will have the opportunity to regain eligibility at the three week progress report period, but the student must be passing all of their classes, not just the class the student previously failed.  If the student does not regain eligibility at this time, the student will have the opportunity to regain eligibility at the end of the six weeks grading period.

In order to keep your child participating in all events at school, be active in monitoring your child's academic progress regularly.  Sign up for the parental portal, contact your child's teacher, sign up for Living Tree notifications, and communicate with your child in order to ensure an "owlstanding" school year.
Dear Parents,

The spring semester is underway, and many UIL activities have already begun.  Odem Elementary competed in the UIL academic competition in December.   Odem Junior has begun their Ready Writing competition, and results will be announced at the district meet on January 18th and 19th (speaking events will take place on Friday, and remaining events will take place on Saturday).  Odem High School's district academic competition will take place on March 25th and 26th.

Parents encourage your child to participate in any UIL academic activity such as:  number sense, dictionary skills, spelling, storytelling, music memory, ready writing, art memory and oral reading.  UIL academic events provide students with an opportunity to challenge themselves in a variety of activities, and to become involved in all areas on their respective campuses.

Best of luck to all of our UIL competitors and UIL sponsors from Odem Junior High on their competition on January 18th and 19th.
Dear Parents,

UIL offers numerous contests for grades 2-8, and according to the UIL website more than half a million students participate in UIL academic contests each year.

UIL activities are meant to complement the academic curriculum, and are designed to encourage and motivate students to think outside the box and acquire higher level thinking skills.  UIL activities are created to challenge students to tackle issues of importance, and to provide students with opportunity to practice and master specific academic skills in and outside of the classroom.

Parents continue to encourage your students to participate in any academic events offered on campus throughout the remainder of the year.  UIL activities provide students with an opportunity to sharpen their thinking skills and become independent thinkers.

Students can regain eligibility on February 21st.  Parents please continue to monitor your child's grades and progress in the classroom.
